Duties and Responsibilities
- Assume responsibility for the overall operation of the Pharmacy department.
- Conduct staff meetings and attend management meetings, fostering clear communication and collaboration.
- Model staff behavior to provide quality, effective patient care, setting a high standard.
- Set and work diligently to meet department goals, aligning with Beacon Health System’s mission.
- Prepare the annual operational and capital budget for the Pharmacy department.
- Ensure departments meet or exceed compliance standards (OSHA, Board of Pharmacy, USP, CMS, HFAP).
- Serve as the process owner and leader of Pharmacy clinical and operational services.
- Maintain all necessary Pharmacy Department licenses.
- Maintain ACHS Sterile PCAB Accreditation, ensuring compliance with sterile compounding standards.
- Ensure all licensed pharmacy staff have current and active licenses.
- Conduct interviews and coordinate the hiring process for all pharmacy staff.
- Participate in hiring, counseling, evaluating, and educating associates.
- Oversee the provision of departmental orientation for new associates.
- Develop and maintain staff competency assessment programs to ensure skill proficiency.
- Provide appropriate computer/systems access to pharmacy associates.
- Lead departmental huddles, facilitating daily communication and problem-solving.
- Be responsible for the preparation and maintenance of pharmacy associate files.
- Directly supervise Pharmacy staff members, providing guidance and support.
- Be responsible for annual performance appraisals for all pharmacy staff.
- Oversee scheduling for the Pharmacy Department, ensuring adequate coverage.
- Assist with onboarding new staff, ensuring a smooth transition into the department.
- Manage payroll for Pharmacy staff, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Manage and direct all activities of the hospital pharmacy, including physical appearance, staffing levels, staff management, 340B program oversight, accuracy of dispensing/billing systems, controlled substance control, quality of drug manufacturing/compounding, clinical programs, and inventory management.
- Conduct annual review and implementation of new departmental policies and procedures.
- Monitor compliance with system, hospital, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Participate on hospital committees, contributing pharmacy expertise.
- Oversee/participate in various Pharmacy related community programs.
- Maintain financial and inventory control according to hospital standards.
- Oversee daily operations involving controlled substance dispensing, ordering, distribution, recordkeeping, and discrepancy follow-up.
- Ensure medications are continuously available to patients.
- Investigate, evaluate, and resolve concerns of customers and staff promptly.
- Provide oversight for the implementation of process and quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintain security and confidentiality of patient and system privileged information.
- Oversee 340B staff, program details, policies, and procedures.
- Support ongoing training, education, and communication for the 340B program.
- Actively engage with senior leadership and participate in 340B decision-making.
- Be responsible for oversight of all audits (self and external) related to pharmacy operations.
- Monitor and assess 340B guidance and/or rule changes, ensuring continuous compliance.
- Ensure the 340B program is continuously compliant with evolving regulations.
- Maintain knowledge of policy/legislation changes affecting the 340B program.
- Perform all dispensing and clinical duties of an inpatient staff pharmacist when needed.
- Maintain the hospital drug formulary.
- Provide pharmacy related in-services to other departments as needed.
- Oversee the Pharmacy, Nutrition and Therapeutics Committee.

Qualifications
- Experience Level: Mid-Level (1-2 years job-related experience required; supervisory experience preferred).
- Education Requirement: Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy or a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
- Required Skills:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy or a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
- Valid Michigan pharmacy and controlled substance license or licensure eligibility.
- Minimum of one to two years of job-related experience.
- Supervisory experience in pharmacy services (preferred).
- Understanding of hospital committee activities (preferred).
- Strong clinical and/or operational background (preferred).
- Familiarity with hospital policies and procedures as well as policy development and implementation skills.
- Thorough knowledge of pharmacy computer systems and generalized computer skills.
- Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to dispensing of medications and controlled substances.
