Job Overview
Ashby is a leading B2B SaaS company that’s revolutionizing Recruiting Technology, empowering businesses across the globe to optimize their hiring processes. We’re seeking a highly skilled and innovative Design Engineer to join our fully remote team in Canada. This Full-time, Senior-Level / Staff-Level role offers a unique opportunity to build and iterate on software directly in code, shaping the user experience of a complex and rapidly evolving product.
As a Design Engineer, you’ll be instrumental in bridging the gap between design and development, making significant contributions to our design systems and enhancing the user experience through flexible, composable components. You’ll leverage your deep knowledge of React, CSS, HTML, and other modern web technologies to tackle challenging design problems, prototype with actual logic and data, and ensure a seamless product experience. If you’re a lifelong learner, humble, kind, and passionate about increasing leverage through developer tooling rather than just team size, Ashby invites you to join our groundbreaking team.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Bring at least 5 years of experience as a full-time frontend engineer or evenly split between frontend and design to drive product development.
- Make significant contributions to (or lead) design systems, ensuring scalability and consistency across the platform.
- Apply deep React, CSS, and HTML knowledge to build high-quality user interfaces.
- Utilize experience working with TypeScript (frontend & backend), Node.js, Postgres, Redis, and Apollo GraphQL for robust full-stack development.
- Demonstrate familiarity with SASS modules and Stitches for styling complex components.
- Possess the ability to design and build software, iterating directly in code, blurring the lines between design and engineering.
- Be able to start ideas in Figma but ground them (or be more creative) in code, pushing the boundaries of design implementation.
- Create compelling prototypes with actual logic and data to validate design concepts thoroughly.
- Tackle challenging design problems and help others improve designs through expert guidance and collaboration.
- Lead efforts in expanding and enhancing in-house design systems and consult on bespoke work for various product needs.
- Contribute to redesigning mobile web apps, including optimizing customer interaction flows, wireframing, and implementing design systems.
- Build flexible, composable components in a design system that can be reused and scaled across the entire product.
- Help other engineers improve design’s information hierarchy and scannability, enhancing usability.
- Exhibit strong collaboration and deliberate communication skills with all team members and stakeholders.
- Embody the qualities of a lifelong learner, humble, and kind team player.
- Possess the ability to conduct research, prototyping, and create written proposals for design solutions.
- Focus on increasing leverage, not team size, through innovative developer tooling and reusable building blocks.
- Take ownership and autonomy over projects end-to-end, from speaking with users to writing product specs and handling UX design.
- Be ready to push your first change on day one, demonstrating immediate impact.
- Utilize mentorship capabilities to guide and develop less experienced team members.
