Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receive prescriptions, obtain complete information, and accurately enter them into the Pharmacy Information System.
  • Fill patient prescriptions with the correct medication, affix labels, and utilize a double-check system for accuracy.
  • Ensure appropriate patient teaching sheets and medication guides are attached to prescriptions.
  • Ensure a pharmacist checks each prescription before distribution.
  • Call insurance companies for claim processing and prior authorization requests.
  • Utilize the IVR system for efficient patient communication.
  • Work within standard work protocols for safe and efficient workflow, leveraging barcode scanning technology.
  • Complete controlled substance C-II counts and maintain accurate logs.
  • Triage patient or customer drug information questions to the pharmacist as appropriate.
  • Process individual patient refill requests efficiently.
  • Assist identified patients with Medication Assistance Program or manufacturer’s coupon programs.
  • Follow processes for filling prescriptions to meet all federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Audit prescriptions waiting for pickup and return to stock when necessary.
  • Process returns accurately in the Pharmacy Information System.
  • Perform duties as an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician, as assigned, demonstrating versatility.
  • Check supplies and medications for outdated items monthly.
  • Balance the cash drawer daily, ensuring financial accuracy.
  • Be responsible for making cash deposits and verification.
  • Run Daily Sales Analysis Reports and assist with Monthly Finance Reports.
  • Complete ordering of quality inventory, minimizing costs and maximizing profitability.
  • Maintain efficient, cost-effective inventory par levels of office supplies.
  • Run the McKesson order analysis report daily.
  • Receive medications and supplies from wholesalers, meticulously checking against invoices.
  • Process returnable goods for credit.
  • Change wholesaler inventory labels on shelves as needed.
  • Rotate stock and dispose of outdated supplies according to protocol.
  • Assist in the completion of department inventory and biennial controlled substance inventory.
  • Complete the HIPAA Disclosure Log monthly.
  • Complete billing of accounts accurately.
  • Complete reconciliation of third-party billing and prepare monthly reports.
  • Provide contractual allowance worksheets to the Finance Department.
  • Utilize consistent, approved pricing schedules.
  • Assist with monitoring the Med-Asset Contract Pricing Verification Report.
  • Manage invoice coding and processing in the P2P electronic system.
  • Ensure pharmacy compliance with Drug Supply Chain Security Act regulations.
  • Politely answer and screen phone calls, accurately relaying messages.
  • Demonstrate a high level of customer service in all interactions.
  • Triage customer phone calls and window visits efficiently.
  • Work cooperatively with other hospital departments and physician offices.
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff members.
  • Assist in compliance and readiness activities.
  • Participate in quality improvement and TVM (total value management) activities.
  • Assist in clerical functions as needed.
  • File all records appropriately.
  • Assist with third-party audits.
  • Maintain quality logs (temperature monitoring, compounding).
  • Assist in marketing efforts.
  • Maintain an up-to-date OTC list on the hospital intranet.
  • Attend and participate in department meetings, complete mandatory education/competencies/health requirements, and maintain license/certification.
  • Consistently utilize appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques.
  • Adhere to regulatory agency requirements and policies.
  • Be available to work overtime and additional shifts/schedules.

Qualifications

  • Experience Level: Entry-Level to Mid-Level (1-2 years of Pharmacy Technician experience required).
  • Education Requirement: High School Diploma or Equivalent required. National Technician Certification preferred initially, required within 6 months.
  • Required Skills:
    • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
    • Indiana Pharmacy Technician License.
    • Previous work in a pharmacy (hospital or retail) required.
    • Successful completion of the National Pharmacy Technician Certification exam within six months of obtaining position.
    • Knowledge of medical terminology.
    • Computer skills (including WORD, EXCEL, fax machine, order entry equipment).
    • Math skills.
    • Knowledge of medical office procedures and day-to-day hospital/retail pharmacy operations.
    • Ability to lift items weighing up to 40 pounds.
    • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively and maintain positive working relationships.
    • Ability to effectively communicate with, document, and verify confidential information.
    • Ability to maintain accuracy, prioritize workload, perform multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.
